On August 31, 1954 Thomas Franklin Payne was born to Layton and Joy Payne. He grew up north of Oswego. Tom enjoyed the country life and doing things the “old way” which entailed no electricity or running water. He liked to remind us of the way he grew up. He told stories of him and his brothers Carl and John, the fun they had farming, ranching, and hauling hay all over the state of Montana and Wyoming.
He went to school in Frazer, which is where he met Darla Jackson. They were married and had three children, Olyn, TJ and Jeanette. He was a great husband and dad. He provided for his family by driving truck for most of his later years. He also farmed, worked at the Tribal Ranch and Oftedal as an oiler/mechanic.
He liked mechanics, swimming, visiting and drinking with his many friends; most of which he’s with now. Later in life he enjoyed being a grandpa. When he had to step up, he did. He was proud of receiving the grand-parent award at Headstart. His grandkids are, Hailey, Hannah, Alayna, Madison, Arawyn, Tommy, Kaylynn, Dakota, Jaxon, Rory and Rozzy.
He is survived by his children Olyn Payne (Billings), Jeanette (Great Falls); sisters Susie (Bob) Symington, Cleo MacDonald, Gloria Urbaniak, Faith Ann Tall Whiteman; his sisters-in-law JoEllen (Ooge) Grandchamp and Davey Jean Stewart; also many nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife Darla, his son TJ and his granddaughter Jolee, his parents Layton and Joy Payne.
