Rodney Standen

March 28, 1937 — February 16, 2026

Poplar

Rodney John Ashby Standen was born March 28, 1937 to John and Maisie Standen in Johannesburg, South Africa. While he was a young boy, his father entered the Royal Marines and fought in World War II. In 1948, he welcomed his brother, Glyn. Rodney was especially fond of his grandmother, Constance Lilian Hooton.

After attending school at Pridwin and at Marist Brothers in Johannesburg, he began working in advertising at FOX and moved into writing film advertising. In 1965 he received an award (Deplome) from the Cannes Film Festival. Later, in 1968, he moved from South Africa to London, England, to pursue a career in screen writing.

While in London, he met and married the love of his life, Ilene, who encouraged him to move to Los Angeles to pursue a film and writing career. In the 1970's he became a United States citizen.

After 11 years in Los Angeles, Rodney moved to Poplar, Montana, when Ilene started teaching at Fort Peck Community College. He used the opportunity to complete a Doctorate in Comparative Literature and Eastern Studies in 1986. His Dissertation was turned into a book, "The Changing Face of the Hero." Shortly thereafter he began teaching at FPCC: English, Writing, Film, History, Poetry and other classes. He was well loved and admired by his students. And he loved and admired his students back.

Rodney retired in 2012 and continued to read, write and enjoy his own education. He passed away February 16, 2026, at the age of 88. He is survived by his wife Ilene, brother Glyn, nieces Brianne and Paige and numerous dogs and cats!
