Newton J. Cantrell started his journey home October 25, 2024.
Newton was born March 21, 1939 to Marie and Otto Cantrell, Sr. He attended the Poplar school system until he reached the age of 17 when he promptly enlisted in the Marine Corp. Newton was stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA where he met and married E. Sharon Cantrell from this union came Carmen, Warren and Newton, Jr. Upon leaving the military Newton returned home with his wife and daughter. After a few short years they divorced and Newton met and married Emily Bird, from this union came Lucy, Charlie, Carol and Annie. Newton then met and married Donna Shawl and took her children, Robert “B.J” and Desi Schafer, Terri Ann and Angela Walker as his own children.
Newton worked in the oilfields working his way up to the driller, as well as being a diesel mechanic, a trade learned while in the Marines. He was also a skilled upholsterer and owned and ran a video store for a time.
Newton enjoyed his culture, fancy dancing at the local celebrations and the occasional Kahomini. He also enjoyed having food stands at the celebrations where he visited with his customers.
Newton is survived by his children Carmen, Lucy White Eyes, Annie, Robert “B.J.” Schafer, Desi Schafer, Terri Ann (Kenneth) Enemy Hunter and Angie (Darrin) Bahlman; brothers Leonard (Sharon) Otto Cantrell, Jr., Arthur, Sr.; sisters Ida Youngman, Mary Wolf Child, Yvonne Griffin, April Old Rock, Georgianne Smith; nieces and nephews Janet (Jerry) Mudgett, Claudia Fourstar-Brien, Rose Looking, Mavis Draszt, Maurice Draszt, Mervyn Shields.
Newton has an extremely large family and extended family too numerous to mention, please forgive us for not naming everyone it was not intentional.
