Hazel Mary Cantrell (Four Cane Woman), age 82, passed away June 2, 2015 in Laurel. Hazel was born on April 15, 1933 to Otto and Mary (Littlebull) Cantrell in Poplar. She attended schools in Poplar and Wolf Point graduating with her bachelor’s degree from NAES College in 1990. She was an active member of the Southside Assembly of God Church in Wolf Point.
Hazel spent her professional life working as a licensed practical nurse, a drug and alcohol counselor, and an educator. She enjoyed baking, crocheting, crafts, canning, camping, family gatherings, cooking, traveling, music, and the arts.
Hazel is survived by her brothers and sisters: Stephen Greyhawk, Emma Groat, Vivian Martin, Newton Cantrell, Ida (Cantrell) Youngman, Otto Cantrell, Jr., Leonard Cantrell, Mary Wolfchild, Sylvia Cantrell, Arthur Cantrell, Virgil Cantrell, and Yvonne Griffith, and April Old Rock. She is survived by her children: Cheryl Simmons, Harry Crom, Liana Bates Hall, Danetta Bates, Angela Bates, Anita Bates Trice, and honorary daughter Patricia Bird.
Hazel is survived by 21 grandchildren, 38 plus great grandchildren, and 16 plus great great grandchildren. She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews too numerous to mention.
Hazel is preceded in death by her parents Otto Cantrell and Mary Little Bull, Wayne “Jiggs” Cantrell, David Cantrell, Llewellyn “Rusty” Cantrell, Milty Cantrell, Franky Birdsbill, Courtney Cantrell, Merle Lucas, Richard Cantrell, Emily Cantrell, and Rose Cantrell.
A wake will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at the New Wolf Point Community Hall. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at the New Wolf Point Community Hall. Interment will occur at St. Ann’s Cemetery in Poplar following the services. Clayton Stevenson Memorial Chapel in Wolf Point is in charge of arrangements.
