Elizabeth Fowler

Aug 10, 1934 — Sep 21, 2026

Wolf Point, Montana

Elizabeth Fowler passed away peacefully Monday afternoon, September 21, 2026 at NEMHS hospital in Wolf Point, MT. She was 92 & had been living at home with her family before old age & severe arthritis became too much for her. She was one of the kindest, nicest & most gracious person one could ever meet. Her motto was always, "Why can't people just be kind to one another?" It was how she'd lived her life, kind to everyone.

Elizabeth was born August 10, 1934 in Edmore, ND to Richard & Mary Jane (Bercier) Graham then moved to Raymond, MT in 1939 to farm her mother's deeded land. She was very proud of the fact that her mother had been deeded this land from Belcourt, ND & was enrolled herself with the Turtle Mountain Chippewa, Pembina band. She always instilled that in all her children of where they come from & what they were a part of. She was also very proud of her Irish father, a self taught veterinarian known to others as "Doc" Graham. Her time in Raymond was very special to her with her siblings, her parents, her years on the farm. She spoke very fondly of those memories, especially time with her sisters who she was very close to all her life before each of their passings.

Attending school in Raymond, then graduating from Plentywood High School in 1952 with her best friend of all, her sister Jessie. And of course, those two girls did everything together, like getting married on the same day to best friends John & Stanley on April 19, 1953 in Plentywood in a double wedding. Elizabeth married John Fowler & Jessie married Stanley Nichols forever being remembered as a foursome. John worked hard locally, becoming well known as a highly skilled mechanic before accepting a job with the State Highway Department in Wolf Point in 1963, moving their four sons, Dale, Glenn, John & Donnie from Plentywood.

Then after a few short years, in 1969 her & John finally had a daughter, Susan. She loved being a mother, a wife & cherished time with her family. Throughout the years, John & Liz spent lots of time taking the kids back & forth to Plentywood often for visits & spend various holidays with numerous relatives on both sides of their extended families. Her mother was very important to her & looked up to her alot, often quoting her or using the old fashion wisdom instilled in her, sharing it with her own children. Her mother was the biggest influence in her life, even after her passing in November of 1978. Although her death was very hard on her, it brought her closer to her mother-in-law, Margaret. It was Margaret who taught Liz how to cook & what a good cook she was. One of the numerous reasons relatives loved to visit her in Wolf Point. Relatives were always welcome at Liz's home. And since the Stampede rodeo was so popular over the years, the Fowler home was the place to be for good food & good people, especially because of Liz.

Being the devoted mother she was, she chose housewife/motherhood as her full time job until all her children were grown & in school. There was no end to her love & support for her children, even as they became adults, it never wavered. She had worked briefly at Trinity Hospital in the kitchen before working as a secretary/bookkeeper for Culligan Water. She also spent time working at R.S.V.P., the Retired Senior Volunteer Program as a secretary as well. Then later as bookkeeper for then Valley Motor Supply, which now ironically is CarQuest, the current employer of her son Donnie & his boss, her grandson, DJ. It was thru those years, close family friends, Norman & Doris Larter encouraged her & John to became members of the local Trinity Luthern church by having their two youngest children, Donnie & Susan baptized there with the Larters becoming Godparents. The Larters were very good friends to the Fowlers for many years, Doris was considered her best friend. Liz & John would often help with the church, if needed, by volunteering their time by signing up to clean the church or later years, Liz would teach Sunday school often & even as church secretary once or twice & as church treasurer, also. She always tried to be involved with the church or offered her assistance. Her kindness & generousity was just a given, she knew no other way.

Having been known as one of the most caring mothers of all time, it was no surprise becoming a Grandmother is what helped her sweet & gentle ways truly shine. Her grandkids always loved being at Grandma's house, especially for the holidays, but then any relative or friend who'd ever met Liz enjoyed going to her house for a visit. Liz always had kind sincere words for others & was a geniunely sweet person to all. She loved music & enjoyed dancing & going to dances with John, even though he danced too fast for her at times. She encouraged her children to read books as much as possible, while always having a book herself to read at all times, even reading a book more than once if she didn't have a new one to read or if she really liked it. She knew an education mattered & was a necessity in life. Her & John believed in always doing the right thing or doing right by others. Her often repeated phrase, "Just tell the truth, it's easier to remember." was one of her basic rules of life. Both had many friends in Plentywood & Wolf Point, becoming friends with anyone who met them. They were very well thought of, no matter which community or who was asked.

After John's retirement from the Highway department in 1993, the two of them traveled around Montana & various places visiting friends & relatives, yet stayed very devoted to John's mother, Margaret who by then was at Faith Luthern Home in Wolf Point after John's father, Bill had passed away years earlier in Plentywood. When not traveling, her & John visited her every day until her passing in November of 2001 at the age of 96.

John kept busy over the years, working in his garage or making home improvements, basically any do-it-yourself project he could think of. But spending time with family mattered & always with Liz right by his side for 59 years of marriage until his passing in August of 2012 followed by her sister Opal's untimely death just fifteen days later. These back to back losses hit her hard. Her lifelong faith is what kept her strong, even thru grief she held herself together with such grace & dignity, it was something to be admired.
